Is the field of Business Analysis and art or a science?

The answer is yes. It is both.

Business Analysis is a relatively new field. The IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis was established in 2003 and formalized the field with a Body of Knowledge, tools, templates, and certification programs. It is recognized as a science.

But much of the work of a Business Analyst relies on taking a creative approach, solving problems, overcoming hurdles, coming up with something new and innovative. It is an art.

The bottom line is that Business Analysis is about people. The Business Analyst must actively listen, adapt communication styles, assess a group’s attitude, root out the cause of symptoms, uncover the mysteries of corporate culture, build bridges between people and processes.
